Final Fantasy 14’s director, Naoki ‘Yoshi-P’ Yoshida, recently unveiled some exciting information about the MMO’s upcoming expansion, Dawntrail. However, it was one particular comment during his presentation at PAX East that caught the attention of fans and sparked rumors about a possible Final Fantasy 9 remake.

During the presentation, Yoshi-P showcased the Collector’s Edition of Dawntrail, which featured a variety of physical goodies. But it was the digital bonuses that raised eyebrows, especially the recreation of FF9’s Ark summon as a mount in FF14. Additionally, there were references to characters and items from Final Fantasy 9, such as a wind-up Princess Garnet minion and a chocobo brush for the new Pictomancer class.

Fans were delighted to hear about the pre-order bonuses, which included a wind-up minion of FF9’s protagonist Zidane. The announcement of a Final Fantasy 9-themed mount and minions based on the game’s iconic characters further fueled speculation among the audience.

Yoshi-P’s cryptic statement about the abundance of Final Fantasy 9 references being a “secret” only added to the excitement. While some believe it could be a hint at a crossover event within Final Fantasy 14, others speculate that it may indicate a potential remake of Final Fantasy 9.

The rumors about a Final Fantasy 9 remake have been circulating for years, with one particularly notable instance being the Nvidia leak three years ago that listed the game among upcoming projects. While nothing has been confirmed by Square Enix regarding a FF9 remake, the recent hints and teases from Yoshi-P have reignited the hopes of fans.

While it is always important to approach such speculation with caution, the subtle nods and references to Final Fantasy 9 in Final Fantasy 14’s upcoming expansion have undeniably sparked excitement and curiosity among fans. Whether this will eventually lead to a full-fledged remake of the beloved classic remains to be seen, but the possibility is certainly tantalizing.
