The gaming laptop market is about to get a significant boost with the upcoming launch of gaming laptops equipped with AI Copilot Plus features by Nvidia and AMD. Nvidia recently teased the arrival of “RTX AI PC” laptops from Asus and MSI that will feature up to GeForce RTX 4070 GPUs and power-efficient systems-on-a-chip with Windows 11 AI PC capabilities. These laptops will also come with AMD’s latest Strix CPUs, although AMD has yet to provide detailed information about its AMD Strix laptop CPUs.

Nvidia’s collaboration with Microsoft on AI models built into Windows 11 is a significant development. Microsoft’s Windows Copilot Runtime, announced at Build last month, aims to simplify the process for developers to integrate AI-powered features into their applications. This collaboration will provide developers with easy API access to GPU-accelerated small language models (SLMs) that enable retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) capabilities running on-device powered by Windows Copilot Runtime.

Nvidia is positioning itself to remain relevant in the AI-powered tasks on laptops by leaning into branding “RTX AI laptops” and emphasizing the capabilities of its GPUs in running heavier AI workloads compared to an NPU. The upcoming RTX AI Toolkit, set to launch in June, will include tools and SDKs for model customization, optimization, and deployment. This toolkit will enable optimization of models to run efficiently with less VRAM requirements and improved performance.

A key point of differentiation between NPUs and GPUs lies in performance capabilities. While NPUs are currently operating at a performance mark of around 40 TOPS, Nvidia’s PC GPUs can handle over 1,000 TOPS for AI acceleration. This performance gap presents developers with the choice between NPUs for smaller models that prioritize high power efficiency in laptops and GPUs for handling larger models with superior performance in PC desktops where battery life is not a concern.

The integration of AI capabilities into gaming laptops by Nvidia and AMD signifies a major step forward in enhancing the overall gaming experience. With the promise of AI-powered features and tools for developers, the upcoming RTX AI PC laptops have the potential to redefine the standards for gaming performance, efficiency, and user experience. As the collaboration between Nvidia and Microsoft continues to evolve, we can expect to see further advancements in AI technology that will shape the future landscape of gaming laptops.
