AMD recently announced two new variants of the Ryzen 5000 Series CPUs at the Computex show. The Ryzen 9 5900XT, a 16-core chip, fills the gap between the existing Ryzen 9 5900X and 5950X models. On the other hand, the Ryzen 7 5800XT is an eight-core CPU that closely resembles the Ryzen 7 5800X.
The Ryzen 7 5800XT features eight Zen 3-spec cores on a single CCD, connecting to AMD’s I/O and memory controller die. With eight cores, 16 threads, a 105 W TDP, and 36MB of cache, the new 5800XT is largely similar to the older 5800X. The main difference lies in the maximum boost clock speed, with the 5800XT achieving 4.8 GHz compared to the 4.7 GHz of the 5800X.
While the performance of the Ryzen 7 5800XT is expected to be on par with the 5800X, pricing remains a concern. Initially listed at $249, AMD later claimed this was an error. The 5800X, which launched at $449, is currently available for $198.98 on Newegg, making the potential $249 price tag for the 5800XT less appealing.
The Ryzen 9 5900XT stands out as the more intriguing option due to its 16 cores, bridging the gap between the 5900X and 5950X models. While the final price for the 5900XT is yet to be confirmed, the initially listed price of $359 for a 16-core CPU is significantly lower than the $799 price tag of the 5950X back in November 2020.
Despite the appeal of a 16-core CPU at a potentially lower price point, the current market prices for the 5950X are already competitive. With a maximum boost clock of 4.9 GHz compared to the 4.8 GHz of the 5900XT, potential buyers may opt for the existing 5950X instead.
Future Expectations for AMD CPUs
The competitive pricing of the new Ryzen 5000 Series variants is crucial for their success in the market. While the initial prices may not offer significant savings compared to existing models, adjustments in the coming months could make these CPUs more attractive to consumers. Overall, the Ryzen 7 5800XT and Ryzen 9 5900XT have the potential to be compelling options for users looking to upgrade their AM4 systems with higher core counts and improved performance.
