Apple TV Plus, Apple’s streaming service, is facing challenges in the competitive streaming industry. Despite investing billions of dollars in Hollywood projects, Apple is experiencing production losses. In an effort to make the Apple TV Plus business more sustainable, Apple’s senior vice president of services, Eddy Cue, is urging studio chiefs to closely monitor project budgets. Compared to streaming giants like Netflix, Apple invests heavily in individual projects, spending over $500 million on movies from acclaimed directors. However, Apple TV Plus is struggling to attract viewers, accounting for only 0.2 percent of US TV views, while Netflix commands 8 percent.

Even though Apple’s original projects receive visibility during award seasons, they are not translating into viewer engagement. Bloomberg reports that Apple TV Plus is not generating the same level of viewership as Netflix, with fewer views per month compared to Netflix’s daily averages. Furthermore, Apple is now canceling original series projects more quickly than before and is licensing more content from competitors to diversify its offerings. This shift indicates that Apple is trying to reduce its reliance on original series but is still facing challenges in competing with established streaming platforms.

One of the key challenges for Apple TV Plus is the lack of transparency in viewer metrics. Apple does not share figures on how many people are watching its original programming, making it difficult to gauge the success and engagement levels of its content. Additionally, Apple’s revenue from selling hardware products like iPhones complicates the understanding of the financial pressure on its studios. While Apple has not resorted to mass layoffs like some of its competitors, such as Disney and Paramount, the uncertainty surrounding viewer metrics and financial pressures adds to the challenges faced by Apple TV Plus in the streaming industry.

Apple TV Plus is struggling to compete with established streaming platforms like Netflix in terms of viewership and engagement. The company’s heavy investment in Hollywood projects has not translated into sustainable success, leading to concerns about project budgets and viewer metrics. As Apple continues to navigate the evolving streaming landscape, it will need to strategize and innovate to maintain its position in the highly competitive industry.
