As a proud owner of six Amazon Echo smart speakers, the Echo Dot with Clock quickly became my favorite due to its unique LED dot matrix display that seamlessly showcased the time without being intrusive. However, my excitement quickly turned to disappointment when I learned that Amazon has decided to discontinue this model in favor of a more expensive and less aesthetically pleasing option. This news came as a blow to many loyal customers, including myself, who appreciated the simplicity and elegance of the Echo Dot with Clock.

While Amazon has not provided a concrete reason for discontinuing the Echo Dot with Clock, speculations have surfaced regarding potential hidden defects in the device. Personally, I encountered issues with my own Echo Dot with Clock freezing and becoming unresponsive, leading me to believe that there may have been underlying issues with the product. However, after receiving a replacement Echo and going through multiple resets, the device eventually started working again. This experience raised concerns about the overall reliability and performance of the Echo Dot with Clock.

Upon discovering that the $60 Echo Dot with Clock was no longer available for purchase, I decided to explore alternative options offered by Amazon. One such option was the $80 Echo Spot, which replaced the dot-matrix display with a screen. Despite its higher price point, I found the Echo Spot to be lacking in visual appeal compared to its predecessor. The screen’s brightness and quality left much to be desired, with a noticeable tilt that seemed more suitable for nightstand use rather than placement on a taller dresser.

While my colleague has expressed a favorable opinion of the Echo Spot in her upcoming review, I found myself more inclined towards the Echo Dot with Clock due to its superior audio quality and simplistic design. The Echo Spot may offer additional features such as music playback controls and weather updates, but it fails to provide the same level of user experience as the Echo Dot. Basic functions like setting alarms with a touch interface are noticeably absent from the Echo Spot, making it less practical for everyday use.

Despite experimenting with the Echo Spot as a potential replacement for my beloved Echo Dot with Clock, I ultimately decided to return the former and stick with the latter. The reliability, design, and functionality of the Echo Dot with Clock far outweigh any perceived benefits of its successor. As a dedicated user of Amazon’s smart speaker lineup, I hope to see the company reconsider its decision to discontinue the Echo Dot with Clock and provide more options for customers who value simplicity and elegance in their devices.
