Samyang has introduced a unique prime lens that allows photographers to change the focal length by swapping out just the optical elements inside it. This innovative design aims to make it easier for photographers to lighten their camera bags without sacrificing image quality.

Prime lenses, by nature, do not offer zoom capabilities like zoom lenses. However, they are known for delivering sharper images and a shallower depth of field. This can result in stunning photos with enhanced bokeh effects, making prime lenses a popular choice among professional photographers.

The Samyang Remaster Slim autofocus lens measures just 0.8 inches thick, making it a compact and lightweight option for photographers on the go. The lens features a smaller magnetic mount that allows for the easy swapping of optical elements to change the focal length.

Initially, Samyang will offer three different inserts for the Remaster Slim lens: a wider 21mm f/2.8, a 28mm f/3.5, and a 32mm f/3.5 more suitable for close-up portrait photography. However, it is important to note that the lens is only compatible with Sony’s E-mount lens system, limiting its use with other camera brands.

Potential Tradeoffs

While the Remaster Slim lens offers the convenience of interchangeable optical elements, there may be some tradeoffs in terms of image quality. Samyang claims that the lens provides a “genuine analog sensibility” reminiscent of old film cameras. However, this could also mean that the lens produces softer results compared to other prime lenses with faster maximum apertures.

The Samyang Remaster Slim lens was available for preorder in South Korea for 308,000 won, or approximately $229 USD, before selling out. Shipping is expected to begin in early September, with wider availability in South Korea by early October. As of now, there is no information on the availability of the lens in other markets.

Samyang’s Remaster Slim autofocus lens offers a unique solution for photographers looking to streamline their gear without compromising image quality. While it may not be suitable for all photography styles, the convenience of interchangeable optical elements and compact design make it a promising option for certain photographers.
