In just 122 days, Musk’s new AI startup, xAI, has developed what is being touted as the most powerful AI training system on the planet – Colossus. This cutting-edge system is designed to train the latest iteration of the GROK language model, GROK-3, and boasts a staggering 100,000 Nvidia H100 GPUs.

While the exact cost of Colossus has not been disclosed, estimates suggest that the Nvidia H100 GPUs could range anywhere from $20,000 to $90,000 each. With 100,000 of these chips required for the initial phase of Colossus, the total cost could easily surpass $2 billion. Additionally, the construction of the datacenter, infrastructure setup, staffing, and other associated expenses further add to the hefty price tag of this ambitious project.

Prior to the development of GROK-3 and Colossus, xAI had introduced GROK-2 as an exclusive offering for X subscribers. GROK-2 utilized a modest 15,000 H100 chips for training purposes, yet it still managed to rank second in the League of Language Models (LLM), trailing only ChatGPT-4o. With Colossus expected to be six to seven times more powerful than GROK-2 in its initial phase and set to double its capabilities in the near future, Musk is clearly aiming to establish the most dominant LLM in the market.

According to Musk, GROK-3 is anticipated to go live by December, marking a significant milestone in the development of AI technology. However, the deployment of such a massive AI cluster like Colossus does not come without consequences. Located in Memphis, Tennessee, the system is projected to consume 150 megawatts of power and allocate up to one million gallons of water daily for cooling purposes. This environmental impact, along with broader apprehensions about the ramifications of advanced AI and Musk’s unpredictable behavior, raise valid concerns about the ramifications of Colossus’s operation.
