As we approach the conclusion of 2024, there’s a certain level of reflection that comes with looking back at personal gaming experiences. For many, platforms like Spotify Wrapped serve as an annual reminder of what consumed our time over the past year. For me, it was a revelation to find Persona 3 Reload listed as my second-most played game on Xbox, racking up an impressive 132 hours. This statistic initially sparked embarrassment, but it also catalyzed a deeper examination of my evolving relationship with JRPGs. After all, this was my first full dive into the genre, and it was a journey filled with unexpected discoveries.
My extensive gaming hours can be traced back to February—a month jam-packed with late-night plays and weekends devoted to exploring the intricacies of this captivating game. Surprisingly, it took me a staggering 86 hours to recognize my enjoyment. This realization unveiled an evolution in my perspective concerning JRPGs, a genre I had avoided for years due to preconceived notions and social stigmas.
Although I was initially apprehensive, Persona 3 Reload has since played a pivotal role in unpacking the biases I harbored towards JRPGs. My previous relationship with the genre was riddled with uncertainty and fears of inadequacy, feelings that many gamers understand all too well. There’s an intimidating nature that surrounds the genre, often perceived as a monolithic entity—an imposing foreboding beast showcasing big-name titles and obscure gems alike that seemed insurmountable to navigate.
Moreover, my past experiences contributed to a complicated relationship with JRPGs. Growing up in Hong Kong among expat peers, playing RPGs was frowned upon. An unspoken rule dictated that such games were owned by a niche group perceived as socially unacceptable—local kids, older men lurking in the shadows of DVD stores, or Westerners overly fascinated with Japanese culture. I internalized this belief, unable to embrace what was, in reality, a rich and diverse genre. To put it plainly, these misguided notions made me feel uncomfortable even at the thought of engaging with JRPGs.
For years, I wanted to confront that chip on my shoulder, yet I shied away from major newer releases that didn’t strike me as approachable. Owning a PlayStation 5 would have opened doors to titles like Final Fantasy Rebirth, but that was off the table. I also dismissed games like Metaphor: ReFantazio due to its ambiguous title, which only exacerbated my existing hesitations. However, when it came to Persona 3 Reload, something felt different. This game compelled me to take the plunge, offering familiar yet fresh gameplay elements that gradually washed away my fears.
The unique blend of supernatural themes, particularly its exploration of metaphysical realms in a supernatural “25th hour,” piqued my interest. As a horror enthusiast, the concept of exploring darker and more complex narratives resonated with me. The turn-based combat system appealed to my tabletop RPG sensibilities, transforming what once felt like a daunting engagement into a source of excitement and exploration.
Persona 3 Reload ultimately dismantled many of my previous discomforts. While the game still incorporates teenage characters—occasionally adorned in outfits that toe the line of appropriateness—the developers at P-Studio and Atlus made commendable strides to modernize the content. The outdated sexualization prevalent in earlier installments, experienced painfully during my encounter with Persona 3 Portable, was largely absent here, allowing me to appreciate the characters on a more profound level.
Instead of feeling burdened by past stereotypes, I found myself invested in the narrative and the growth of these characters, powered by an unyielding momentum that consistently pushed me deeper into its world. Each gaming session turned into an irresistible urge for more, leading to countless moments of connection and revelation.
As 2024 concludes, I am left with a newfound appreciation for JRPGs. Persona 3 Reload has successfully shattered many of the negative associations I held, igniting a curiosity that I am eager to keep exploring as I venture into 2025. The playground rules that once dictated my gaming choices have dissipated, replaced by an open heart ready to embrace everything the genre has to offer.
