Nanoleaf has recently launched its smart switch called the Sense Plus Smart Wireless “Anywhere” Switch after nearly a decade of development. This smart switch is aimed at bringing physical control to Nanoleaf’s smart lighting system, allowing users to have more control over their lighting setup and system. The Sense Plus Smart Wireless Switch offers some unique features such as built-in motion and light sensors, two configurable buttons, and compatibility with various smart home platforms like Apple Home and Samsung SmartThings through Matter.
The development process of the Sense Plus Smart Wireless Switch involved a pivot from its initial adoption of Thread to creating a new proprietary protocol called Litewave. This shift was necessary to ensure a seamless and reliable wireless switch experience for users. Nanoleaf co-founder and CEO, Gimmy Chu, mentioned that finding the right technology for this product took eight years, highlighting the complexity and challenges involved in integrating various protocols and technologies.
The Sense Plus Smart Wireless Switch utilizes two protocols simultaneously to connect with Nanoleaf’s lights: Matter over Thread and the newly developed Litewave protocol. Litewave serves as a proprietary local protocol that allows the switch to communicate with all Nanoleaf lights, regardless of whether they use Thread, Bluetooth, or Wi-Fi. This combination of protocols ensures a robust and reliable connection for instantaneous control, similar to flipping a traditional light switch.
Nanoleaf faced challenges with Matter over Thread implementation, leading them to develop Litewave as a solution for ensuring compatibility with their smart lights. Chu highlighted the struggles with Matter’s complexity and the company’s lack of control over the Matter controller, which affected pairing and network maintenance. The introduction of Litewave provided Nanoleaf with more autonomy and reliability in its smart switch integration.
In response to the evolving smart home landscape, Nanoleaf is diversifying its product offerings by introducing its first Matter over Wi-Fi light bulb to cater to a broader audience. This strategic decision reflects the company’s focus on expanding its market reach and adapting to changing consumer preferences. Additionally, Nanoleaf’s collaboration with retailers like Walmart indicates a shift towards mass-market appeal and accessibility.
