Nintendo recently reported its financial results for the first quarter of the 2024/25 fiscal year, showcasing a decline in both hardware and software sales. The company revealed that Switch hardware sales have reached 143.42 million units, a slight increase from the previous report in May. However, the sales for the Switch family of systems experienced a 46.3% decline year-on-year, with only 2.1 million consoles sold between April and June. Similarly, Switch software sales also saw a drop of 41.3%, with 30.64 million units sold in the same period.
Nintendo attributes this decline to the overwhelming success of two major releases: The Super Mario Movie and Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, launched in April and May of 2023 respectively. The ‘Zelda effect’ is recognized as a crucial factor in the decrease in sales, not only for Nintendo but also affecting the industry as a whole. Despite the expected decrease in demand as the Switch enters its eighth year on the market, the company acknowledges that the sales success of Zelda and the effects of the weak yen have intensified the year-on-year decline in their reports.
The company highlighted that hardware sales have remained steady compared to the previous quarter, with 1.96 million Switches sold. Among the models, the OLED version continues to be the most popular, selling 1.24 million units, while the regular Switch and Switch Lite sold 0.53 million and 0.33 million units, respectively. Nintendo’s overall hardware sales table as of June 30, 2024, reflects these figures.
In response to the declining sales and waning interest in the current console, Nintendo announced that news of the “Switch successor” would be revealed before the end of the fiscal year. The anticipation for ‘Switch 2’ is evident among gamers, signalling a shift in focus towards the upcoming release. As gamers eagerly await more information about the successor, it remains to be seen if the momentum of the Switch can propel it to the top of the hardware sales charts, surpassing iconic consoles like the DS and PS2.
