The recent release of Risk of Rain 2: Seekers of the Storm has caused quite a stir among fans of the co-op roguelite. The DLC, however, has not been well-received by the gaming community, with a majority of negative reviews on Steam. This unexpected backlash has brought to light a myriad of issues that have plagued the game since its release.
Technical Problems Galore
One of the main complaints about Seekers of the Storm is the plethora of bugs that have infiltrated the game. Players have reported that the DLC has caused many of the base game’s core systems to malfunction, leading to a frustrating gaming experience. Gearbox, the company that acquired Risk of Rain from Hopoo Games, has acknowledged these issues and is working on fixing them. However, some major problems such as a boss becoming invincible and players getting stuck in odd situations like “smelling the flowers” have left players feeling disheartened.
In response to the criticism, co-creator Duncan Drummond expressed mixed feelings about the situation. While he acknowledged the efforts of the development team, he also empathized with the players who have been affected by the technical issues. Drummond mentioned that it is challenging to witness the growing pains of the new team at Gearbox, who are under immense stress to rectify the problems while also celebrating the launch of the new DLC. Despite the current hardships, Drummond remains optimistic about Gearbox’s commitment to improving the game and listening to player feedback.
Player Feedback and Resilience
The lead programmer, co-designer, and concept artist of Risk of Rain 2, Jeffrey Hunt, also weighed in on the situation. Hunt expressed sympathy for the development team, acknowledging the time and resource constraints they faced while working on the DLC. He praised Gearbox for their work on previous content updates but expressed disappointment in how rushed changes have impacted the quality of the latest release. Additionally, Randolph P. Itchford, a key figure in the game’s development, reassured fans that the team is actively addressing the issues and compensating for any inconveniences caused.
Despite the rough start to the Seekers of the Storm DLC, the player base has generally been supportive of Gearbox’s efforts. In the past, Gearbox has received praise for their management of the game, even adding free content updates to keep players engaged. However, the recent acquisition of Gearbox by Rockstar parent company Take-Two has raised concerns about the future of the game and the impact it may have on the development team.
The release of Risk of Rain 2: Seekers of the Storm has been a turbulent experience for both players and developers. While the game has faced significant technical challenges, there is hope that Gearbox will address the issues and improve the overall gaming experience. Only time will tell how the game will evolve in the coming months and whether fans will continue to support the franchise despite its rocky start.
