Designing a new class for a game like Diablo 4 can be a daunting task, but the class designer behind the upcoming Spiritborn found it to be a truly “freeing” experience. With over 60 prototyped skills to choose from, the development team had the opportunity to try out some truly unique and innovative ideas. While not all of these skills made it into the final game, the designer, Bjorn Mikkelson, remains hopeful that some of the team’s favorite skills may resurface in the future.

One of the standout aspects of the Spiritborn class is its ability to draw on the power of the centipede, showcasing the team’s willingness to explore new and unconventional ideas. Mikkelson highlights that Diablo 4 typically doesn’t focus on fear as an ability, but the Spiritborn presented an opportunity to delve into this concept further. Additionally, the class introduces a new blocking mechanic that deviates from the traditional shield-based approach, offering a more dynamic and engaging way to mitigate incoming damage.

The introduction of the Vessel of Hatred class in Diablo 4 marks a significant shift in how blocking is approached in the game. By incorporating a martial arts-style blocking technique that utilizes the hands instead of a shield, the designers have managed to inject a fresh and dynamic element into combat. This new approach not only enhances the player’s sense of immersion but also opens up a realm of strategic possibilities in terms of gameplay.

As the Spiritborn prepares to make its debut in Diablo 4’s upcoming DLC, Vessel of Hatred, players can expect to embark on a thrilling journey filled with exciting new gameplay mechanics and challenges. The creative process behind the development of this class serves as a testament to the team’s dedication to pushing boundaries and exploring uncharted territory within the game. With its release scheduled for October 9, the Spiritborn is poised to revolutionize the Diablo 4 experience and redefine the way players engage with the world of Sanctuary.
