Video game companies, like Sega, often make the decision to delist older titles once a remaster or remake is on the horizon. This has become a common practice in the gaming industry, and Sonic Generations is no exception. Sega has announced that the original Sonic Generations will be delisted as a standalone title on September 9 in preparation for the release of Sonic x Shadow Generations.
Despite the delisting of Sonic Generations as a standalone title, Sega has made arrangements to ensure that the game is not forgotten. The original version of Sonic Generations will still be available in bundles on platforms like Steam and Xbox. This allows gamers to continue enjoying the iconic title alongside other Sonic games. Additionally, those who already own Sonic Generations will still be able to download and play the game even after it’s delisted.
One of the concerns raised by fans was whether mods on the Steam version of Sonic Generations would be affected by the delisting. Sega has confirmed that mods will not be impacted, providing relief to the modding community. Furthermore, old school gamers have the option of purchasing Sonic Generations for the Xbox 360, which is backwards compatible on Xbox One and Xbox Series X. Amazon is currently offering new copies of the game for a reasonable price, making it a good opportunity to secure a copy before it becomes harder to find.
In addition to the delisting of Sonic Generations, Sega has also announced the upcoming release of Sonic x Shadow Generations. This remaster includes the first game alongside a new title, Shadow Generations, and the two games take place concurrently with each other. Sonic x Shadow Generations is set to launch on multiple platforms including Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and PC on October 25.
While the delisting of Sonic Generations may be disappointing for some fans, Sega’s commitment to preserving the game in bundles and ensuring mod support is commendable. The upcoming release of Sonic x Shadow Generations also provides an exciting opportunity for gamers to experience both old and new titles in the Sonic franchise.
