The images indicate that the new thermostat maintains the physical dial of the third-generation model but features a more curved display, suggesting a sleeker design. One notable addition is the inclusion of a touchscreen display, similar to the third-generation model, with a new icon displaying three wavy lines. This icon suggests that the new thermostat will also serve as an indoor air quality monitor, a novel feature for Nest thermostats.
Accompanying the new thermostat is a redesigned version of the Nest Temperature Sensor, now in its second generation. These sensors, which can be wall-mounted or placed on a table, are speculated to work seamlessly with the new thermostat. Although sharing similar functionality with the current models, the updated sensors have a new look, characterized by a rounder and squishier appearance. Priced at $39 each, or three for $99, these new sensors promise a three-year battery life, maintaining the affordability of the previous models.
Rumors suggest that the new thermostat may feature Google’s Soli radar, a technology employed in the Nest Thermostat (2020). The Soli radar is used to illuminate the thermostat’s display upon approach and detect user presence, enhancing the device’s functionality within Google’s Home & Away Routines. While FCC filings did not confirm the inclusion of a Thread radio, a surprising omission considering its past association with the original Nest thermostat, it is anticipated that the new model will offer a more advanced user experience.
In contrast to the newer, more budget-friendly Nest Thermostat that supports the smart home standard Matter, the current Nest Learning Thermostat stands out for its adaptive capabilities. The Learning Thermostat can learn and adapt to users’ heating and cooling patterns, providing a more personalized experience compared to traditional programmable thermostats. With the recent discounts on the current model, priced at $169 down from $249, consumers are eager to see if the upcoming launch will bring significant upgrades to justify the wait.
As tech enthusiasts eagerly await the upcoming Google hardware event scheduled for August 13th, speculations regarding the authenticity of these leaks continue to circulate.
