In the ever-evolving world of technology, the competition among companies to dominate the global market is intense. While global PC shipments experienced a decline for much of 2023, some green shoots have been spotted in terms of recovery in the industry, especially in the CPU sector. According to recent statistics from Canalys, a global technology market analyst firm, Intel seems to be leading the comeback over its competition in the CPU market. For the last quarter of 2023, Intel shipped a staggering 50 million CPUs, maintaining a market share of a truly gigantic 78% with a 3% year-on-year growth. This figure stands in stark comparison to AMD’s eight million shipments and a market share of 13%, showing a slight decline in shipments year on year. Additionally, Apple reported six million units shipped with a 4% decrease in shipments. This dominance by Intel is quite impressive, especially considering the competitiveness of AMD in the desktop chip market.

The PC notebook sector has been credited with leading the charge in both rising GPU and CPU segments. While gaming laptops are likely to account for a portion of this rise, laptop and notebook sales as a whole are said to account for almost 69% of the global CPU market. Team blue, as Intel is often referred to, seems to have a clean sweep in the x86 CPU segment, firmly holding its grip over the market. However, recent leaks suggest that AMD may soon release some new contenders in the desktop CPU market with its “Granite Ridge” Zen 5 architecture chips potentially launching between April and June of this year. On the other hand, the new “Strix Point” Zen 5 mobile chips for laptop CPUs are also rumored to make an appearance later this year. As Intel remains tight-lipped about the next-generation Arrow Lake desktop CPUs, the competition between the two giants is expected to intensify in the coming months.

It is worth noting that while Intel currently dominates the CPU market, AMD has been making gains towards closing the gap. However, Intel still has a significant lead and remains the top player in the industry. It remains to be seen whether a new generation of chips from either company can swing the market one way or the other, or if Intel will continue its dominance into the future. With Computex approaching in June and Intel’s Pat Gelsinger set to deliver a keynote, there is anticipation for potential announcements regarding new desktop and laptop chips. AMD’s “Granite Ridge” Zen 5 architecture chips and Intel’s Arrow Lake desktop CPUs are expected to compete head-to-head in the market, showcasing the ongoing battle for dominance in the CPU sector. Time will tell how these new developments will shape the future of the CPU market and whether Intel can maintain its lead against its competitors.
