Arrowhead Studios, the developer of the popular co-op game Helldivers 2, has issued a warning to players regarding fake versions of the game that have appeared on Steam. In a recent message on Discord, the studio revealed that there are fake games being marketed as Helldivers 2, despite not being affiliated with Arrowhead Studios in any way. The studio’s legal team is working to have these fake versions removed from Steam as soon as possible.

Thanks to the swift action of Arrowhead’s legal team, at least two of the fake versions of Helldivers 2 have already been delisted from the digital storefront. This comes as a relief to both the developers and the players who may have unwittingly purchased these illegitimate copies. It raises questions about how such obvious forgeries managed to get past Steam’s checkpoints.

Arrowhead Studios makes it clear that the only genuine versions of Helldivers 2 are the official releases: Helldivers 2 and Helldivers 2: Super Citizen Edition. Players are advised to check the release date to confirm the authenticity of the game, as Helldivers 2 was officially released on February 8, 2024. The studio emphasizes the importance of avoiding fake versions not only due to the risk of scams but also for security reasons.

Aside from Helldivers 2, other popular games have also been targeted by copycats. Games like Palworld, Last Epoch, and Escape From Tarkov have all had fake versions circulating on Steam. This trend of fake games being marketed under false pretenses is not only misleading to players but can also harm the reputation of the legitimate developers.

The prevalence of fake versions of popular games on digital storefronts like Steam highlights the importance of vigilance on the part of players. It is crucial to verify the authenticity of a game before making a purchase to avoid falling victim to scams. Developers, like Arrowhead Studios, play a crucial role in alerting players to the presence of fake versions and taking action to have them removed. By working together, developers and players can help protect the integrity of the gaming community and ensure a positive gaming experience for all.
