Over twenty years ago, Kirsten Dunst played the iconic role of Mary Jane Watson in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy. However, in a recent interview with Variety, Dunst admitted that she has not seen any of the Spider-Man movies that followed her performance, nor has she watched any of the Marvel Studios films. She expressed that the superhero genre is “just not my thing,” showcasing a lack of interest in the genre that made her a household name.

Despite her disinterest in superhero movies, Dunst did reveal that she is open to returning to the world of superheroes for one simple reason – money. With two children to support and her mother to take care of, Dunst acknowledged the financial benefits that come with starring in blockbuster superhero films. This pragmatic approach to her career choices sheds light on the realities of being an actor in Hollywood.

While Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield were invited back to reprise their roles in the upcoming Spider-Man: No Way Home, Dunst’s Mary Jane Watson was noticeably absent. However, Dunst expressed her willingness to return to the role opposite Maguire if given the chance. She even proposed a unique, indie take on the superhero genre, referencing the film Chronicle as inspiration for a potential collaboration with Maguire.

As Marvel and Sony have yet to announce the release date for the next MCU Spider-Man movie, Dunst’s future in the superhero genre remains uncertain. Sony, on the other hand, has two upcoming Spider-Man Universe films on the horizon – Kraven the Hunter and Venom: The Last Dance. Whether Dunst will make an appearance in any of these future projects is still unknown.

Kirsten Dunst’s complex relationship with superhero movies reflects the changing landscape of Hollywood and the entertainment industry as a whole. While Dunst may not be a die-hard fan of the genre, her pragmatic approach to her career choices and willingness to explore new and unconventional opportunities showcase her versatility as an actress. Only time will tell what the future holds for Kirsten Dunst in the world of superhero movies.
