Reynatis, the action-RPG game developed by a team of Final Fantasy veterans, was recently showcased during a Nintendo Partner Direct. The game initially gave off the impression of being exclusive to Japan or the Nintendo Switch platform. However, it has now been confirmed that Reynatis will have a worldwide launch later this year on various platforms including PS5, PS4, and PC. The game features a vibrant recreation of modern-day Shibuya and revolves around a storyline involving wizard cops trying to combat the city’s “rubrum” addiction issue.

The game is written by Kazushige Nojima, a renowned developer behind titles such as Final Fantasy 7, Final Fantasy 10 and 10-2, Kingdom Hearts, and the upcoming Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. He is joined by Yoko Shimomura, a veteran composer responsible for iconic scores in games like Street Fighter 2, Super Mario RPG, Kingdom Hearts, and Final Fantasy 15. Despite the impressive credentials of the development team, Reynatis has been criticized for its rough visuals, including low-polygon character models and frame rate issues evident in the trailer.

The gameplay of Reynatis appears to be a typical JRPG-style action RPG, featuring Musou-esque sword fighting, precision dodging, special abilities with area-of-effect damage, and gunplay. The trailer showcases minimal combat, leaving much to the imagination regarding the depth and mechanics of the gameplay. The narrative seems convoluted, with references to a magical portal in Shibuya leading to a mysterious realm, adding to the complexity of the storyline. Despite the intriguing premise, the lack of coherent gameplay footage raises concerns about the overall experience.

Concerns and Expectations

While the world and setting of Reynatis may appeal to fans of Japanese-themed games, the disjointed storytelling and technical issues raise doubts about the game’s potential success. The involvement of esteemed developers like Nojima and Shimomura is a promising sign, but it remains to be seen how their contributions will impact the final product. With the game set for release later this year, there is a sense of anticipation mixed with skepticism among players eager to see more gameplay and details about Reynatis.

Reynatis has generated both excitement and apprehension within the gaming community due to its intriguing premise, experienced development team, and technical shortcomings. The upcoming action-RPG has the potential to be a standout title in the genre, but it must address its current challenges and deliver a cohesive gameplay experience to win over players worldwide. Only time will tell if Reynatis can live up to the expectations set by its creators and carve a niche for itself in the competitive gaming market.
