Behaviour Interactive, the developer behind the popular game Dead By Daylight, recently announced plans to lay off up to 95 employees as part of strategic structural changes within the company. This move is aimed at drawing upon the company’s historical strengths to craft a more ambitious vision for its future success.

The decision to lay off employees comes as Behaviour Interactive acknowledges a significant increase in its employee count over the last five years, from 575 to 1,300. The company attributes this growth to the remarkable expansion of the gaming industry as a whole. However, this growth has also resulted in unprecedented competition, prompting the need for strategic changes to strengthen the company’s position in the market.

Behaviour Interactive’s Montreal studio appears to have been hit the hardest by the layoffs, with 70 employees being removed from their positions. Despite this, the development of Dead By Daylight, the studio’s biggest IP, will not be affected by the reduction in staff. This decision reflects the company’s commitment to maintaining excellence in its products.

In response to the layoffs, co-founder and CEO Rémi Racine expressed personal appreciation for the affected employees. He emphasized that the company’s restructuring and strategic vision are aimed at positioning Behaviour Interactive for continued success. As the company enters the next phase of growth, its dedication to excellence in products and workplace culture remains unwavering.

Layoffs in the gaming industry have been on the rise, with Behaviour Interactive’s announcement coinciding with similar news from other companies. Just Cause developer Avalanche Studios recently revealed plans to close two studios, including its Montreal location, after just eight months of operation. These developments underscore the competitive and challenging nature of the gaming industry.

Behaviour Interactive’s decision to lay off employees reflects the company’s strategic efforts to adapt to the evolving gaming landscape. While these changes may be difficult for those affected, they are essential for ensuring the company’s long-term success. As the gaming industry continues to grow and evolve, companies must make tough decisions to stay competitive and maintain their place in the market.
