After the less than stellar reception of the latest Benchmark test for Final Fantasy 14, Square Enix has taken player feedback to heart and is working on improving the character models. The previous test left many players feeling like their Warriors of Light were cursed beings with lifeless eyes. Game director Naoki Yoshida acknowledged the disappointment and pledged to make things right. During a recent broadcast, Yoshida revealed that Square Enix is actively working on implementing the feedback received from the Benchmark test.

The new and improved character models are not just limited to the Benchmark test software, but will also be included in the upcoming 7.0 update of Final Fantasy 14, set to launch alongside the Dawntrail expansion on June 28th. The goal is to have these improvements ready for the Benchmark software by May 30th, although Yoshida emphasized that this timeline is tentative and subject to change due to the amount of work required. Despite the challenges faced during the overhaul process, the team is dedicated to delivering a polished experience for players.

One of the main reasons for the strange look of the characters in the Benchmark test was attributed to lighting issues rather than the character models themselves. Yoshida explained that certain lighting conditions caused discrepancies in facial features, such as smile lines appearing unnatural. To address this, the team has not only revamped the lighting system but also made changes to specific facial features to enhance expressions. By making these adjustments, Square Enix aims to bring a more lifelike and engaging visual experience to players.

One specific concern raised by players was the size of Miqote characters’ teeth in the updated models. The community expressed relief and joy upon learning that the teeth size had been increased in the improvements. While players hoped for the ability to manually adjust Miqote teeth size during character creation, Yoshida clarified that this feature was not feasible given the extensive modifications made to the character designs. Despite this limitation, the overall improvements to the character models have been well received by the community.

The 7.0 update for Final Fantasy 14 is set to bring significant graphical enhancements to the game, marking a new era for players. Scheduled for release on June 28th, the update coincides with the launch of the Dawntrail expansion, offering players a fresh and visually stunning gameplay experience. Unlike the delays experienced with previous expansions, Yoshida assured fans that Dawntrail is on track and nearing completion in its final development stage. With the improvements made to the character models, players can look forward to a more immersive and visually appealing journey in the world of Eorzea.
