PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, commonly referred to as PUBG, has announced the return of its original map, Erangel, now dubbed Erangel Classic. The decision to bring back the classic map seems to have drawn inspiration from Fortnite’s Battle Royale mode, which recently took players on a trip through the past with its Season OG.

Erangel Classic will not only reintroduce the original map layout and locations lost in subsequent updates but also bring about essential gameplay changes. These include rebalanced weapons with reduced recoil and a longer time to knock down enemies, the reintroduction of bench weapons, and the revival of fog and rain weather conditions. Moreover, the game’s user interface will feature a “vintage” map, minimap, and fonts that developers describe as “charmingly tacky,” adding to the nostalgic 2017 feel.

Upon landing on the island, players will notice the reappearance of the Tommy Gun in care packages. Additionally, they will be able to pick up clothes and helmets from the floor, reminiscent of the game’s early days. Erangel Classic will temporarily replace the current map for two weeks, from May 14th until May 28th, accessible through Normal Match mode.

PUBG’s decision to introduce Erangel Classic reflects a trend of borrowing ideas from its competitor, Fortnite. The move is aimed at revitalizing the game and attracting players with a nostalgia factor. By taking cues from Fortnite’s successful run through past seasons, PUBG hopes to reinvigorate interest in the battle royale shooter genre.

This isn’t the first time PUBG has drawn inspiration from Fortnite. The introduction of destructible terrain in a recent update is another nod towards the popular features of its competitor. By incorporating elements that have contributed to Fortnite’s massive success, PUBG aims to stay relevant in an ever-evolving gaming landscape.

The resurrection of Erangel Classic in PUBG signifies a strategic move by the developers to capture the essence of the game’s early days and appeal to players seeking a taste of nostalgia. By blending new gameplay features with iconic elements from the past, PUBG paves the way for a revitalized gaming experience that aims to rekindle the magic of its original success.
