After spending countless hours immersed in the world of Helldivers 2, I couldn’t help but draw parallels between this game and the beloved Halo franchise. While at first glance they may seem vastly different, there is a shared essence of multiplayer mayhem and cooperative chaos that resonates between the two. The joy of accidentally fragging friends or blowing up teammates while trying to navigate through missions together is a true hallmark of the Halo experience. Helldivers 2 has managed to capture this essence and allowed players, like myself, to rediscover the same camaraderie and laughter that defined classic Halo gameplay.
One of the key elements that makes Helldivers 2 feel like a Halo game in disguise is its expansive and downright ridiculous arsenal of weapons. From humble assault rifles to half-ton bombs and orbital lasers, players have access to a diverse and overpowered sandbox that leads to inevitable chaos when playing with friends. The ability to unlock increasingly bonkers weapons mirrors the foundation of Halo, where players have been accustomed to wielding powerful and varied armaments. The moments of hilarious mishaps, like vaporizing a teammate with a mistimed orbital strike, are what truly define the cooperative chaos that both Helldivers 2 and Halo excel at.
Despite the success of Helldivers 2 in capturing the spirit of Halo’s cooperative play, there has been a noticeable shift in the mainline Halo games developed by 343 Industries in recent years. The introduction of personal ordnance drops and microtransactions in Halo 4 and 5: Guardians, respectively, showcased a departure from the teamwork-oriented nature of the franchise. The emphasis on personal power and progression systems detracted from the core elements that made cooperative play in Halo so compelling.
As Halo Infinite enters its final season and 343 Industries prepares to move on to new projects, the future of the Halo franchise remains uncertain. The absence of core features like online campaign co-op and Forge at launch, coupled with the lack of innovative pitches for new Halo games, has left fans wondering about the direction of the series. While Helldivers 2 has managed to fill the gap with its phenomenal co-op gameplay and expansive weapon sandbox, the legacy of Halo as a flagship franchise seems to be at a crossroads.
The accidental success of Helldivers 2 as an unintentional Halo game serves as a reminder of the importance of cooperative chaos and camaraderie in gaming. While the Halo franchise may have lost some of its luster in recent years, there is still hope for a resurgence of the cooperative spirit that defined the series. As we look towards the future, it is my hope that developers take inspiration from the success of games like Helldivers 2 to create memorable cooperative experiences that capture the essence of what made Halo great in the first place.
