The latest figures from Mercury Research have shed light on the ongoing battle between Intel and AMD in the CPU market. AMD has managed to gain significant year-on-year market share from Intel in desktop, laptop, and server segments. Intel, on the other hand, has experienced a slight increase in total x86 chip market share, largely due to a decline in sales of AMD’s SoCs, particularly chips in gaming consoles.
In the desktop x86 CPU market, AMD has seen a notable increase in market share, climbing to 23% in the second quarter of 2024 from 19.4% a year ago. This growth has come at the expense of Intel, whose share dropped from 80.6% to 77%. Despite this shift, Intel still maintains a strong foothold in desktop CPUs, holding the majority of market share.
Similarly, AMD has made strides in the laptop CPU market, with its market share rising to 20.3% in the latest quarter from 16.5% in the same period last year. Intel, once again, has seen a slight dip in its share. AMD’s progress in laptops showcases its competitive edge and growing presence in this segment.
The server segment has also witnessed a significant shift, with AMD’s market share improving from 18.6% to 24.1% from Q2 2023 to Q2 2024. This growth highlights AMD’s increasing popularity in the server market and its ability to challenge Intel’s dominance in this critical segment.
Mercury Research’s data also reveals a decline in PC sales powered by Arm CPUs. Despite the buzz around Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon X chips, sales of Arm-based PCs, including Chromebooks, have been decreasing. While Qualcomm’s advancements in the CPU market are promising, it will take time to see the impact of these developments on overall market share.
It is clear that AMD is steadily gaining ground in the CPU market, particularly in desktops, laptops, and servers. While Intel maintains a significant share in all three segments, the competition is heating up. As both companies continue to innovate and introduce new technologies, the battle for CPU dominance is far from over. Future quarters will provide insights into how these market dynamics evolve and whether AMD’s momentum continues.
The latest market share figures from Mercury Research paint a picture of a shifting landscape in the CPU market. AMD’s gains in desktop, laptop, and server segments are evident, while Intel remains a formidable player with a strong presence across all three categories. The rivalry between Intel and AMD continues to drive innovation and competition, benefiting consumers with a wider range of options and technological advancements. As the battle between these CPU giants intensifies, it will be fascinating to see how the market evolves in the coming quarters.
