AMD’s FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) technology suite has recently received a major update to version 3.1, bringing enhanced performance to a number of popular Sony games. Titles such as Ghost of Tsushima, Horizon Forbidden West, Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart, and the two Spider-Man games have all been patched to incorporate the new system. This update includes an improved shader-based upscaler and decoupled frame generation, aiming to provide PC gamers with a boost in performance along with better visual results compared to the previous version.

When AMD unveiled FidelityFX Super Resolution 3.0 alongside its Radeon RX 7000-series GPU launch, the focus was primarily on a shader-based frame generation system rather than an upgraded upscaler. While FSR 2.2 was still in use and offered increased frame rates, its visual quality lagged behind Nvidia’s DLSS Super Resolution in certain games. However, with the introduction of FSR 3.1, AMD has refined its shader algorithm for the upscaler, boasting improved temporal stability, reduced flickering and shimmering, enhanced ghosting reduction, and better detail preservation.

Visual Enhancements and Performance Improvements

The enhancements brought by FSR 3.1 are particularly noticeable in titles like Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart, where the new upscaler outperforms its predecessor in handling rapidly moving objects and detailed textures. While the performance gains may not be substantial, the reduction in visual artifacts like flickering and shimmering significantly enhances the gaming experience.

Decoupled Frame Generator

One of the key additions in FSR 3.1 is the introduction of a decoupled frame generator, allowing for greater flexibility in pairing different upscaling methods with AMD’s frame interpolator. Games like Ghost of Tsushima have already benefited from this separation, enabling GPUs from Nvidia and Intel to utilize their own upscalers while leveraging AMD’s frame generation technology.

Following the full release of FSR 3.1, additional games such as Horizon Forbidden West, Spider-Man Remastered, Spider-Man: Miles Morales, and soon God of War: Ragnarok, will receive patches to incorporate the updated technology. AMD has also optimized the FSR software package for developers and extended support to Vulkan and Xbox platforms, signaling widespread adoption in future game releases. The public release of the SDK next month will shed light on the technical improvements made by AMD to enhance the visual quality of its upscaling system.
